What is a referral request?
A referral request is a message asking a happy client to introduce you to other people who might need your services. Referrals are the most effective way freelancers get new work - they come with built-in trust because someone the prospect already knows is vouching for you.
When should you use one?
After completing a successful project and receiving positive feedback. Ideally within a few weeks of project completion, when the client is happiest with your work.
What's included
The ask - a warm, specific request for referrals. "Do you know any other startup founders who are struggling with their brand identity?" is better than "do you know anyone?"
What you're looking for - a brief description of your ideal client so the referrer knows exactly who to think of.
How to refer - make it easy. Offer options: a direct introduction via email, permission to use their name, or simply passing along your details.
What's in it for them - consider offering a referral incentive: a discount on future work, a free add-on, or the promise of giving their referral the same great experience.
No pressure - make it clear there's zero obligation.
Thank you - express genuine appreciation, whether or not they can think of anyone right now.
