What is a model release form?

A model release form is a document where a person gives you permission to use photographs or video footage of them. It's a legal consent form that protects you from claims related to using someone's likeness in your work.

Without a model release, you're exposed to legal risk - even if the person happily posed for the photo. Verbal consent isn't enough for commercial use. You need it in writing.

When should you use one?

Any time you photograph or film a recognisable person and plan to use the images commercially - marketing materials, stock photography, brand content, social media campaigns, or advertising.

What's included

Model details - name, contact information, and identification of the person being photographed or filmed.

Shoot details - date, location, and description of the photography or filming session.

Usage rights granted - how the images can be used (commercial, editorial, digital, print), where (Australia, worldwide), and for how long.

Compensation - what the model receives in exchange - payment, free images, or other consideration.

Minor consent - if the model is under 18, a parent or guardian must sign.

Release of claims - the model waives the right to inspect or approve the final images and releases you from liability within the agreed scope.
