What is a photography services agreement?
A photography services agreement is a contract between a freelance photographer and their client. It covers everything from shoot details and editing expectations to image usage rights and cancellation terms.
Photography has unique contract needs. Your clients might not understand the difference between a licence and full ownership, or assume they can use images however they like forever. This template spells it all out clearly.
When should you use one?
Every paid shoot - corporate headshots, product photography, event coverage, brand content, editorial work, real estate photography, or portrait sessions. Even if it's a quick half-day job.
What's included
Shoot details - date, time, location, duration, and any specific requirements like props, wardrobe, or access needs.
Deliverables - number of final edited images, format (high-res, web-ready, or both), turnaround time, and whether RAW files are included.
Usage rights and licensing - how the client can use the images. Covers personal vs commercial use, duration of licence, geographic restrictions, and additional licensing fees for extended use.
Editing and retouching - what's included in the base price (colour correction, basic retouching) versus what costs extra (heavy compositing, skin retouching, background removal).
Cancellation and rescheduling - notice periods for cancellation, fees for late cancellations, and rescheduling policies. Weather-related cancellations for outdoor shoots are addressed separately.
Model releases - when model releases are needed and who's responsible for obtaining them.
